On the 2nd of December 2016 5th class went on a trip to Newgrange Co Meath. Newgrange is the best known Irish passage tomb, it is surrounded by 97 kerb stones, the most impressive of which is the highly decorated entrance stone.
It was a beautiful, cold, crisp morning, perfect conditions for this fantastic trip. We had a guided tour of the 5,000 year old passage tomb, inside the tomb our guide explained the phenomenon of the winter solstice. It was amazing and hard to believe that people 5,000 years ago were such keen engineers!
Take a look at some of our pictures!

On the way back we stopped into Old Mellifont Abbey, Mellifont Abbey was the first Cistercian monastery in Ireland, founded in 1142 by Saint Malachy, Archbishop of Armagh.
The Abbey is in ruins now, but we had so much fun exploring the grounds and guessing what each room had been used for!
